Saturday’s Topic: Explore the Meaning and Function of Human Gaits: Embodied Development and Biomechanics of Walking

In this part lecture/ demonstration, and part experiential workshop we will study the normal gait cycle and its development and function; understand some changes to gait that may arise with aging, injury, disease, and pain; explore the unique characteristics of gait by which we may recognize friends by seeing them move, before we see their faces; and learn about options for positive change that we can employ in practice and for ourselves, using movement, checklists, and self-reflection.

If we are fortunate, we take our mobility for granted, but sometimes pain or other systemic interference brings it uncomfortably to our attention. Our mobility is an embodiment of who we are and what we can do. It is part of what shapes our behavior, whether we use our legs, arms, wheelchair, or other assistance to achieve it.

A visually impaired child who is accustomed to being carried and doesn’t feel the need to walk, a person living with chronic pain whose life is limited by their pain, a person who has had a life-changing injury or disease and is struggling with how to continue; or a weekend-warrior who is recovering from an injury, are some of the people for whom independent mobility may be a critical issue.

This course is open to the public. Prior knowledge would be helpful but is not necessary. Registration is capped at 15 guests.
