On June 11 – 12, Global Water Dances New York (GWD-NY) will join more than 100 cities
worldwide to raise awareness on local water issues and inspire collective action through dance, film, and community environmental collaborations.
In 2021, the biennial Global Water Dances (GWD) celebrates its 10th year of dancing for safe water everywhere, extending a one-day event to a six-day festival of interactive and virtual dance performances beginning on World Oceans Day, June 8. Leveraging the power of the internet and the non-verbal communication of movement, the leaders of Global Water Dances are coordinating outdoor live and pre-recorded programming to facilitate a family-friendly, cost-effective safe series of events. These include online broadcasts that will allow people to connect around the world to learn about a myriad of water initiatives.
Led by somatic movement therapist and educator Dr. Martha Eddy (CMA, RSMT), Global Water Dances New York is a statewide hub for the international organization based in Manhattan. For 2021, Martha Eddy and coordinators Lucy Passaro and Kei Phillip, propel the GWD mission with in-person events at Locomotive Lawn in Riverside Park near 59th Street/Columbus Circle on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12. Featured choreographers will include Lori Bellilove’s Isadora Duncan dance company, Lynn Needle of Art of Motion working with Roxey Dancers, Anna Borou Yu of Coney Island Art Dance, Laura Ward of Octavia Cup Dance Theatre, Wendy Joseph of Wellness Dance, Olga El of The Kandake Dance Theatre of Social Change, Esther Grant and House of Negesti. Community dance rehearsals and the culminating group performance are supported by Moving for Life. Environmental Advocates NY (EANY), New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), and Oceanic Global join our efforts to raise awareness on the contamination of the city’s water sources and promote sustainable practices for the protection of local waterways.
