Psychophysical is a word that appears in the official definition of Somatic Movement Therapy. Rudolf Laban spoke of body attitude; Warren Lamb, his student and colleague, identified effort quality which mapped somatic cues of decision-making. Dr. Judith Kestenberg, a psychoanalyst, forged an alliance between Anna Freud’s view of child psychology with Laban and Lamb’s movement observation analyses creating the Kestenberg Movement Profile. Irmgard Bartenieff brought dance into mental health institutions, the nascent beginnings of Dance-Movement Therapy.
The list of crossovers between mind and body goes on and on in the world of movement. The field of Somatic Psychology is just catching up, predominantly in the realm of trauma therapy and its connection to attachment theory. Where, then, does the concept of “psychophysical” lie in the scope of somatic practice?
Somatic consciousness includes the physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual aspects of the human experience. In this workshop we will explore the body’s impact on our emotions and thoughts, and how internalized mental representations can influence our movement patterning throughout the lifespan.
