Description:

This virtual, 12-hour, weekend workshop explores the relationship between inner-embodied experiences and the social systems that impact human lives with an emphasis on personal, cultural, and social adjustments of the body and mind (including during quarantines).

The Socially Conscious Body (SCB) operates with the understanding that the individual person and his/her/their body or “soma” is not separate from experience in the social context that shapes it.

The exploration of the SCB is the relationship between inner embodied experiences and the social systems that impact human lives. Unlike conventional Somatics, it consciously activates awareness of our social bodies to transform internalized, relational, structural and cultural conditions that impede personal and institutional wellness.

Utilizing theory and exercises from Process Work (Arnold Mindell), Theater of the Oppressed (Augusta Boal), Facilitating Difficult Conversations and Embodied Conflict, we will move the SCB into self, other and group processes to bring wider human awareness and deeper connection.

We are proud to be joined by two other seasoned facilitators: Jeremiah Kyle Drake Director of Theater of the Oppressed at the Riverside Church and Cheryl Clark, Co-ordinator for the Certification Program for the Laban Movement Studies.

This time together will begin & end with creating a compassionate container for attending to human social bodies during these challenging times.

Cheryl Clark, CMA, BMC®, RSME/T, RYT 200, RPYS, has been involved in multiple layers of movement disciplines for over 20 years. Currently, she is on the faculties The New School and Wagner College. Additionally, she is the coordinator for the Certification Program in Laban Movement Studies – Modular formats and co-coordinator for the same program in Taiwan. She has been active in dance and theater performing and choreographing with various independent artists, both in and around New York, and abroad. The New York Times praised her work in the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey’s Production of Romeo and Juliet, calling her choreography “joyous.” She has taught at numerous colleges as faculty and guest and has lectured and taught abroad. This July, she will receive an MS in Dance/Movement Therapy from Pratt Institute.

Jeremiah Kyle Drake is a visual and Theatre of the Oppressed facilitator or “Joker” who hails from Syracuse, New York. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served honorably with the renowned 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg N.C. and upon disharge, used the G.I. Bill to enter Los Angeles City College where he studied Classical Singing. Using his talents as a vocal artist, he then worked as an actor with the Imagination Theatre and the Windy City Players of Chicago. Returning to New York, he then performed with the H.A.D.L.EY. Players of Harlem and since the year 2000, has been the Artistic Director of the Theatre of the Oppressed Uptown at the historic Riverside Church in Harlem. His motto is: “If you do not express your creativity, you will be sad. Have the Courage to be Happy.”
